A Jessica Rabbit costume is a good option for plus sized women, as the red dress the character wears has simple lines that can be altered to fit any shape. Purchasing a plus size Jessica Rabbit costume in a shop can be costly, and making one from home by hand can be a thrifty alternative. This costume requires only a few basic sewing items, and can be completed quickly and simply by even novice sewers.

1. Choose a red fabric reminiscent of the the dress the Jessica Rabbit character wears. Three feet of a shiny red fabric like a poly-satin or a red fabric with glitter on it will work well.

2. Measure the person who will wear the costume. Take measurements of the bust, waist and hips, as well as the width of the shoulders and the height from shoulder to foot.

3. Draw a dress pattern onto a piece of tissue paper designed for making sewing patterns. Use a pencil to draw a simple sheath dress shape that is as wide as the width of the shoulders at top, goes out to the width of the bust, comes in to the width of the waist in the middle, flares out to the width of the hips below and then goes straight down to finish so the tracing is the length of the height of the person meant to wear the dress. This pattern has no sleeves, just wide shoulder straps.

4. Cut out the tracing using scissors, leaving 1/8 of an inch around the pencil drawing to allow for the seams of the dress.

5. Fold the fabric in half length wise so there is now a double layer of fabric. Attach the tissue pattern onto the fabric with straight pins and cut out the fabric using the pattern as a guide, so there are now two identical pieces of fabric cut out. Remove the pattern and straight pins from the fabric.

6. Sew the two pieces together using the sewing machine. Sew a seam up each side of the dress, leaving the space where the arms are to fit open to act as sleeves. Sew a seam at the top of each dress strap, leaving the neck hole open as well.

7. Fold over the bottom edge of the prom dresses under 200 and sew it to make a neat hem. Do the same at the edge of the neck and arm holes so all edges have a nice seam. Turn the cocktail dresses inside out to make a complete costume.
